Prayers for a Better World

  better world large

Loving God...

Loving God,
I pray for children all over the world who do not have enough.
I pray for children who do not have enough love,
Or enough to eat,
And for children who are afraid
Because they live in a place of war.
Especially we think of the children
Who live where you used to live as a child -
The Palestinian and Israeli children.
Please help peace to come to their country, O God.
I also pray for myself,
For all the local children here and their teachers,
And for families.
Make me more loving every day,
Ready to share things with other people
And to welcome the lonely into my life. Amen

God who stands at the crossroads...

God, who stands at the crossroads of life as we make our choices,
I pray for guidance in all that I do.
Give to me the courage and wisdom to choose your way for me,
That I may truly be one of your people.
I pray for those young people
Who are making critical decisions in the direction of their lives.
Be beside them as they do this, loving Jesus.
Silent prayer
I also remember others today
Especially those who hold great responsibility for the peoples of the world.
I pray for our own political leaders
As they make choices on our behalf.
May they be just and true, merciful and ethical,
So that we create here a place of kindness
And community for all people
Silent prayer
Bless all of us,
That we may grow and learn together
In ways which make our choices easier.
I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen

For children caught up in criminal behaviour

Pray today for children caught up in criminal behaviour, and especially those working for adult gangs. Pray too for their families, and the victims of their crimes.
Remember children in custody, and those in care due to criminal activity, that God's spirit might enter their hearts and restore feelings of worth and value.

Stewardship and science

Almighty and eternal God, you have entrusted our minds with science and skill which can greatly bless or wholly destroy; grant us also a sense of responsibility and a stature of spirit to match your trust, that we may use our many inventions to your glory and the benefit of all people.

Peace Prayers (1946)

Peace and Harmony

God and Father of mankind, who in your love made all the nations of the world to be one family; help those of different races to love and understand one another better. Take away hatred, jealousy and prejudice, so that all may work together for the coming of your kingdom of righteousness and peace.

Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941)

Dear Lord our God...

Dear Lord our God,
Help us to see Christ
In others,
Help us to receive Christ
From others,
Help us to share, Christ
With others,
Help us to be Christ
To others,
Help us to bring Christ
To others.
Help us to see that
In him we live and move
And have our being,
That we dwell in him,
And he dwells in us.

David Adam, Fire of the North

Prayer for mercy

Risen Lord, we pray that you will uphold all who are down.
    Lord, have mercy.
Upon the world's poor and the unemployed,
    Lord, have mercy.
Upon the homeless and the refugee,
     Lord, have mercy.
Upon the war torn and the oppressed,
     Lord, have mercy.
Upon the depressed and the despairing,
     Lord, have mercy.
Upon the sinful and the suffering,
     Lord, have mercy.
Upon the sick and the suffering,
     Lord, have mercy.
Upon the diseased and the disgraced,
     Lord, have mercy.
Upon the lonely and the dying,
     Lord, have mercy.
