Prayers for Occasions

On the Occasion of a Wedding

Lord of love,
you bring bridegroom and bride together
to share in the delight and tenderness
of passionate embrace and intimate journey.
Give to all joined in marriage
the gifts of patience and kindness,
forbearance and endurance,
faithfulness and loyalty,
considerate understanding and honour,
that they may be a joyful gift to one another
and grow enriched in mind, body and spirit,
through Jesus Christ, our beloved Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Lord, it is utterly wonderful being in love. The whole world looks different; it is transformed, joyous, and shining. I cannot thank you enough for letting this happen to me. Never let me fall out of love. I know the way of loving must change, must deepen, perhaps even become less obviously joyful, but please make it endure. Help me always to be considerate and understanding, and stop me from causing pain to the one I love. I ask this in the name of your son, Jesus.

Almighty God, you introduced the mystery that a man and a woman should live together as husband and wife, leaving their parents to become one. We thank you Lord, for your fatherly care and for making it possible for our sons and daughters to marry. For as much as without you we cannot do anything, we ask you to make their homes full of peace and love.

Make us loving and faithful fathers and mothers to our sons- and daughters-in-law. Father, send your Holy Spirit into the hearts of our sons- and daughters-in-law; and increase their love so that they will accept us as fathers- and mothers-in-law, even as their own mothers and fathers. Help us to be enduring, understanding, merciful and kind; and to live peacefully in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

In the stillness of this moment I hold my breath, and marvel at the wonder of this second chance in marriage.
God, thank you for this second time of marriage. We each accept all that has gone before. We pledge ourselves to this new love. May our experiences and differences take on a positive value, that through them we may enrich our lives as we learn from one another.
Thank you for our past, for the pains and for the joys.
Thank you for you blessing on us now. May we continue to know this blessing and may it always be part of our lives together.
