Christmas
Lord Jesus,
for eternities now,
heaven and earth,
like fond grandparents,
have thrilled at the sight
of the children's children
ever bringing forth children...
And now,
amid the starlit night,
comes the incomparable Child,
the smile of God
and tenderness toward mankind
We beg you, Lord,
revive in us
the joy of your joy
for ever and ever.
Pierre Talec, France. Prayers Encircling the World.
Today there opens for us
a door once closed,
which a serpent barred in a woman:
and so there gleams the flower of our Lady,
brilliant in the dawn.
Hildegard of Bingen, ed. Bowie and Davies.
Jesus,
how clearly we see you at Christmas-time,
cradled by Mary,
protected by Joseph,
worshipped by shepherds,
honoured by Kings,
enshrined on the altar,
and loved by the world.
But, Oh Lord,
help us to look for you too,
among the taxes of life,
and the wanderings of rootless travellers.
In the world's smelly stables,
and in makeshift mangers.
In sweat-like drops of blood
and rough-hewn crosses, humanly fashioned.
Help us look, Lord -
and help us find!
Not only at Christmas,
but throughout a New Year that might become indeed
‘the year of our Lord'.
Mary Sue Rosenberger, United States. Prayers Encircling the World.
Love
Gives herself to all things,
Most excellent in the depths,
And above all the stars
Cherishing all:
For the High King
She has given
The kiss of peace.
Hildegard of Binge, ed. Bowie and Davies
Christ is come among us.
Give glory.
Christ has come down from heaven.
Give glory.
Christ is on the earth.
Give glory.
Christ gives light to the world.
Give glory.
Christ is with us always.
Give glory.
David Adam, The Rhythm of Life.
