Illness
When illness strikes youI am a whole
Being ill affects me body, mind and soul
Sometimes illness is a word from the wise
A call to slow down
To treat the body with greater respect
To give an opportunity to refresh, replenish and renew
It can provide time out
Time to reflect and time just to be
An illness can simply be a time to recover
For this illness we can give thanks.
Serious illness
I have a serious illness
I have just heard and I'm devastated
Or it is a familiar companion of which I am sometimes accepting, sometimes weary
Or it is frightening me with the immanence of death or life changing disability
Let me bring to you, with no agenda, no mollifying words, no platitudes of healing
Let me bring you my feelings:
Fear
Anger
Worry for my loved ones
Numbness
The desire for hope and the dread of self-delusion
And keep bringing them until I see another way
If there is light in this darkness, show me what it could be
It is said that you are a God who has suffered all this and more
It is said that you bear this with us
Let this be more than words for me now
Let me meet you in this place.
When others are ill
Let me pray for ______ who is ill
But let me start with a prayer for wisdom for myself
Let me understand what it is to pray for the sick
To pray, if I can, in action
To give my time, if I can, to be with them
To give my support in any way that I can
To give my interest and concern
To do my bit
And only then to ask you to heal them
Knowing that I may not understand healing at all.
