Perhaps one of the best known recipients of support from the Books for Life scheme, the name given to the International Study Guide programme, is Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who received a set of the International Study Guides when he was a student during the 1960s in South Africa.
"In my experience, developing countries often have a vibrant spirituality and real thirst for God," he says. "But Bibles and Christian books are in very short supply. If it wasn't for the Books for Life provided to me, I would not have had the start to my ministry that I did." In his life, Archbishop Tutu has achieved enduring change in the material and spiritual lives of the people of South Africa as a whole. Please help us to help other men and women to do the same.
These books are treasured and appreciated by their recipients, as shown by the many letters of appreciation we receive:
"Praise God! I highly appreciate you sending me the gift of books. I feel privileged to receive them and thank you for helping me in my studies. The books are helping me tremendously in my academic progress and I pray that this library will further enrich my knowledge for future service in the Church."
Azariah Kibakusi, Bishop Barham College, Uganda
"I am a second year student at the United Theological College of the West Indies. Very truly these books create a positive impact in my personal life and studies. They are very relevant for the present age we are called to serve. As a beneficiary I encourage sponsors to help the theology students like me to understand the scriptures by giving to the Books for Life scheme."
M. Merove, Jamaica
For many ordinands these books will be among the very few books they will ever own, becoming a life-long resource.
We need your support. Please pray for us.
All donations to SPCK are gratefully received and will be allocated to the area of greatest need, unless you want to give to a specific programme.
